Laundry Stories

Street performance, 2001. Video, 2007. Installation, 2010.
The month after the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11, this performance quietly declared solidarity with protestors of the war on Iraq. I set up a clothesline and ironing board on a street corner in Olympia, Washington, once occupied by three Chinese laundries. I told stories connecting my family's immigration story with the history of Chinese immigration to the Pacific Northwest; the last story of peace-loving Olympians who put a halt to a potential riot, led into an invitation for listeners to share their laundry stories.
Re-edited video included new research about the Chinese expulsions on the West coast.
