The PeaceBirds Project was birthed in response to the most recent Nakba in Palestine. With community participation in Nipmuc homelands in Northeast Turtle Island, the project is growing beyond all borders. Artists Mona Shiber & JuPong Lin printed patterns of the keffiyeh, pre-1948 maps of Palestine & Jerusalem, and excerpts of Genesis 8 and Noah and the dove to use in folding peace cranes and doves. We aimed to fold a bird for every life flown too soon.
Phoenix in the Holy Land is a new play by JuPong Lin that was partially inspired by PeaceBirds. The play strives to transform the agony of witnessing atrocities in Palestine and the surrounding regions into spaces of deep listening and courageous conversations. The play braids together excerpts from the transcripts of the South Africa genocide case against Israel, poetry and the story of three ceasefire activists involved in a small town’s fight to end the assault on Palestinian life.
